Broken Promises Department: I promised you a couple of issues ago that we were going to a new format in which the actual Mind Chatter email would be much smaller, with links to a web page containing the full articles. You may have noticed as you view this issue that (again) we did not do what we said we would do. Well, we ARE going to change to this new format (which will allow us to make Mind Chatter much better, add graphics and illustrations, and do some other great things), but we found there were a few technical challenges that we needed to solve first. So please accept my apologies. we just jumped the gun in announcing the change. As soon as we are able, we WILL be going to this new format. Promise. 3. Do you want to Unsubscribe?? Gasp!! News Flash: In the last issue I mentioned that I was recently interviewed by Tim Miejan, editor-in-chief of The EDGE, a newspaper with editions in both Minneapolis/St. Paul and Kansas City. It turned out to be a great interview, I know you will benefit from it, and I'd like you to be able to read it. The interview will appear in the February issue of The Edge, which will hit the streets on about January 31st. Not only that, but beginning with the March issue, The Edge will begin featuring a series of my articles in each issue. The EDGE's has over 100,000 readers, with content focusing on personal growth, meditation, integrative healing, and other topics I know you'll be interested in. Each month, contributors from throughout the nation offer their perspective on such topics as meditation, personal empowerment, freedom, preparing our children for the future, and other cutting edge topics. The paper regularly contains interviews with such internationally known contributors as Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, physicist Peter Russell, artist Alex Grey, futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard -- and now, me! I have known about The Edge for some time now, and have great respect for what they are doing. Just recently, I've been lucky enough to get to know both Tim Miejan, the chief editor, and Gary Beckman, the owner. The Edge may be the best newspaper of its kind in the entire US, and I think Mind Chatter readers would benefit from subscribing. My interview will appear in the next issue, which comes out in about 2 weeks, and after that they will carry a regular article written by me. A one-year subscription is $35, a real bargain considering what you get. (Neither I nor Centerpointe receive any money from any of this, by the way.) To subscribe, just send a check for $35, or your credit car number with expiration date, to: The EDGE, 14590 Bowers Dr. NW, Ramsey, MN 55303, or call toll-free 1 (888) 776-7616. Major credit cards accepted. For more on The EDGE, go to THE EDGE 10. Improve Your Relationship by Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks, creators of ATTRACTING GENUINE LOVE and other cyber-courses on transformation. RELATIONSHIP QUESTION: I have been dating a woman who has a seriously overdeveloped martyr role. She is very wonderful, compassionate, and caring when it comes to others, but can accept little to none from others for herself. She is sure she is beyond any normal human help at all. My feelings about this are fear, anger, and sadness. Part of my past pattern in relationship is to run out the door the minute things do not work out my way. And I am unwilling to repeat that pattern here, even though things look hopeless right now. ANSWER: One of our wisest professors years ago said, "The biggest problem of all is when you think you do not have a problem, and the biggest persona of all is thinking you do not have a persona." That is often the problem with martyrs--they have been over-controlling and over-extending for so long (and getting rewarded for it) that it does not look like a problem. From your side, though, the big questions that need to be asked are: How did I create this? How am I keeping the game that I am complaining about going through my actions? RELATIONSHIP TIPS: SEVEN ESSENTIAL COMMITMENTS THAT INVITE GENUINE LOVE INTO YOUR LIFE In our last issue we covered the second Personal Commitment: I commit to telling the microscopic truth. Here is Personal Commitment Three. Part 3 - Commitment 3 I commit to becoming the source of full responsibility for my life, including my happiness, my well-being, and my life-goals. I absolve everyone, living or dead, past or present, from any implication that they cause my feelings or actions in any way. Unconscious loving thrives on victimhood. If we do not know that we are the source of what happens to us, if we do not take responsibility for our lives, we are ripe for co-dependence. When we deny that we are the cause of what happens to us, we tend to project it outside on partners, bosses, the world itself. Victimhood is not possible when we take 100 percent responsibility for what happens to us. This concept is so important that we have devoted an entire lesson to it in our course, ATTRACTING GENUINE LOVE, called You Are A Powerful Creator. Being 100% responsible fosters a healthier relationship with ourselves and paves the way for a genuine loving relationship. This Issue's Feature Article: This !@##$% Program Doesn't Work! by Bill Harris, Director Every once in a while, someone writes or calls to tell us that the Centerpointe program "doesn't work," and "why don't we print letters from people who are NOT getting results?" So, I am going to print such a letter, along with my answer, and then add a few comments at the end. I hope this gives you something to think about. To Centerpointe: I believed that I would get "results" at least within 6 months or so, but after over 12 months and forking out heaps of dollars (which I may add I could not afford!!) for Level 1 and 2, nothing has changed in the slightest! Either I'm so well-adjusted I just didn't need it, or I'm doing it all wrong, or it's a lot of hot air and promises that don't come about. When I did ring the "hot line" for advice, the girl on the phone didn't sound like she knew much, let along how to give advice to anyone! Fulfilling? Nothing, though I enjoy listening to rain and waves, etc. I don't have the time to waste if it's not changing my life!! I was advised to go to the second level, even though nothing happened in the first, but I should have saved my money. No change! Don't tell me I'm the only one who's not satisfied, so how come you only publish one letter of dissatisfied customers who eventually comes around?! Be honest and publish a few more!! I'll still continue listening, as they cost me heaps. Grace Marie A., Western Australia Dear Grace Marie, Your comments about the Centerpointe program were passed on to me by Alan Hewitt of Earth Star in Australia. When occasionally I hear from someone who is having trouble with the program or is otherwise dissatisfied, it always troubles me, since I am "on a mission," as they say, to help people become happy, peaceful and effective in the world-not just to sell something to them. For that reason, I thought I would personally respond to your comments. I want you to receive all the benefits the program delivers, and it is in that spirit that I write this letter. Every once in a while someone says "nothing is happening" as they use the program. This almost always means that some part of them is afraid to change-usually unconsciously-even though, consciously, they want to very much. If such a person continues with the program, and does certain other things to deal with this problem, they eventually experience a big "ah ha." When this happens, they suddenly understand that, all along, a lot was happening all along, but for some reason they could not see it. Here is a letter I received in which this was the case. Though this person had their "ah ha" during Awakening Prologue, it is a similar situation to yours: " I began to feel concerned after using Awakening Prologue for about 3 months without seeing the kinds of changes I was anticipating. Adding to this was the fact that I didn't feel comfortable about ordering the next level with what I felt to be rather minor results. I started taking a hard look at the situation (ok, maybe I was obsessing to a slight degree) and even called Centerpointe for advice. Marc told me not to be concerned and that I was doing fine. I sort of wanted him to tell me that I would definitely see results if I went ahead and ordered the next level. (Strangely enough, I guess I was looking for a "harder sell" to reassure me.) But Centerpointe did no such thing. They told me everyone responds differently to the Holosync stimulus and that I shouldn't really concern myself with timetables (It's not a race.) And they told me NOT to order the next level until I was sure that it was something I felt good about. Hmmmmmm. Not the answer I expected or even wanted. Anyway, I took Marc's advice and stopped fixating on results. I just continued to faithfully listen to Dive and Immersion. In fact, I even forgot about when or even IF I was going to order the next level. I just put it out of my mind. About one and a half months later (i.e., 4 and a half months into AP), the lights went on. All of a sudden I realized that major shifts were taking place in my life: a greater sense of well being and happiness; a feeling of being centered and connected with life; a sense of loving objectivity; a quieting of negative internal dialogue. Even stranger, I realized that these changes were taking place gradually the whole time. However, it took 4.5 months for my consciousness to reach the point where I could recognize what was happening all along. What was the key for me was to "allow things to happen." I tend to be rather analytical in my thinking. When I stopped OVERanalyzing and started allowing, everything fell into place. And boy does it feel good when it clicks. For me, I think that my so-called "analysis" of my progress was, in fact, a form of resistance. I'm now about 4.5 weeks into Level One. And curiously, I'm finding myself starting to analyze the effectiveness of this deeper level. I find myself comparing Level One to my experiences with AP. So, my advice overall is: Keep on listening on!"- Brett R. Now, I'd like to ask you to keep an open mind and consider what I have to say here. It is based on experience with over 100,000 people using this program, in addition to thirty years of working as a therapist, workshop leader, and personal change coach. So, assuming that a person can want to change, but unconsciously resist doing so, why would that happen? Why would someone be afraid to change and, because of that fear, block the program (as well as other things they might try) from being as effective as it could be? Here's why: When we are growing up we create a model of who we are and how we relate to the rest of the universe, and we do so in such a way so as to create the greatest feeling of safety in our family situation. When we go out into the world as adults, the feelings, behaviors, strategies, and other ways of seeing ourselves and others often don't work as well as it did in our family. In fact, they often create problems. This often leads to unhappiness, and because we are not happy, we seek to change. But if we find something that really works to create positive change, often a part of us, unconsciously, says "What? Change? Are you kidding? This way of thinking and feeling has kept me safe all these years." And so, we resist. This resistance almost always happens unconsciously, out of our awareness, which not only makes it harder to recognize that it is happening, but also harder to do something about. When there is wounding or trauma during childhood-if our childhood is emotionally or physically unsafe-our internal map of reality becomes even more oriented toward keeping us safe than it ordinarily would be, and our defenses against change become even stronger-even though we desperately want to change. I know this because I was one of these people myself, and it took me many years to overcome it. Without Holosync, I don't think I ever would have. Often people who have this unconscious fear of change try one approach after another, but always end up saying "This doesn't work. Nothing works for me." They become discouraged and disheartened (and often, angry) without realizing that there is something in themselves, unconsciously, that needs to be dealt with in order to facilitate the changes they want. Grace Marie, I don't know you, and I admit this is all an educated guess on my part, but I have considerable experience with this program and with helping people, and my educated guess is that this is probably what is happening for you. Some part of you, at a very deep level, is afraid it won't be safe to change, even though on a conscious level you very much want to. Eventually your continued use of the program will blow through that resistance-if you keep going,. You can help by finding that part of you that does not feel safe changing. Find that part, talk to it (I know that may sound weird, but it works), and find out what it needs to feel safe. See if you can reassure it, and give it what it needs. Maybe you can put that part in charge of making sure the changes you want are beneficial and safe for you. I don't know if you read my twice-monthly articles in our free email newsletter, Mind Chatter, but you can sign up to receive it on our web site, www.centerpointe.com. The past articles are all archived on our web site, and particularly beginning in July of 2001, the past articles would be very helpful to someone in your situation. I highly recommend that you read them. You would also benefit from reading my book, Thresholds of the Mind, which has a lot of information about how the change process happens, how we unintentionally get in the way, and what to do to allow change to happen. If you would like a copy, I would be willing to send you one, free. I know you are frustrated and feel as if you have invested time and money with little to show for it. I understand. With some people, it just takes more time, more persistence, and more courage. I would strongly recommend that you continue with the program, but stay with Awakening Level 1 until you feel some of this begin to shift. Don't even think about going on to any deeper levels of the program. Sometimes going on when there is resistance just intensifies the resistance. I am not interested in selling you anything more, but rather that you get the benefits you want and were promised. I know you can get these benefits, if you keep going, and if you do some reading and thinking about yourself. At some point in the future, if you choose too, you can go on to Awakening Level 2, but for now let's solve the more immediate problem. There is a certain way that people who are happy, peaceful, and effective in the world think and act. Your job is to find out what that way is and adopt it. My writings are designed to give you that information. But what makes it easy to adopt this new way of thinking and acting is increased conscious awareness, and the best way I know of to gain this awareness is through meditation, especially Holosync meditation. When you use Holosync, you gradually become more and more aware of how you create your emotions, your thoughts, and the outer circumstances of your life. Instead of these things seeming to just "happen" to you, you begin to see how they are really self-created, flowing (albeit unconsciously) from your beliefs, values, internal strategies, and other parts of your internal map of reality. Those parts of you that do not serve you naturally diminish and then disappear as your level of conscious awareness increases. Right now, your unconscious mind just does not feel safe letting go of these things, but it will gradually feel more safe if you keep going. This process will take time, and it will take persistence. Other than that, all I can say is be patient and keep going. I've never seen anyone use the program consistently who did not have dramatic positive change. You didn't get where you are in a few months, and you won't get out of it in a few months, either. As I said, for some it takes longer, and the road is rockier. It was that way for me, as a matter of fact. The journey, however, is worth it. You really can live a life that is happy, peaceful, and successful all the time. I know it's easy to be skeptical when something doesn't seem to work, or to think you are the exception and that while it will work for others it won't for you. In this case, it just may take longer for you, but at some point what feels unsafe inside of you will shift, and at that point a huge change will happen that will totally change your life. I don't know exactly what it will be, but won't it be exciting to find out? Let me know how it goes, and if I can help in any way. Just for now, don't worry about going on in the program, and give up evaluating what is or isn't happening. Just use your soundtracks each day. Make it a habit, like brushing your teeth, and then forget about it and go on with your day. At some point you will look back and notice that everything has changed. Be well. Bill Harris, Director Additional comments from Bill: Grace Marie is like many of the people we see who, unfortunately, have the greatest need for the changes the Centerpointe program helps to create: in order to deal with her situation while growing up, she needed to create a very strong and very calcified protective shell, and giving up that shell seems VERY unsafe to her. Yet nothing can change while that shell is in place. Such people go from one thing to the next, but "nothing works." Holosync can and does tear down the wall, allowing very deep change to take place, but for these people it is not as easy as with most people. They have a much greater emotional investment in keeping things the way they are, even when they are miserable and consciously very much want change. I have honestly never seen the Centerpointe program fail to work in any person who persevered. But for some people, if their unconscious mind fights for deal life, thinking that it must do so to remain safe, it can take more time in each level, more help from our support staff, or even face-to-face counseling. In my own journey, I resisted like crazy (and paid for it), but for whatever reason I stubbornly persisted until things changed. It was the best thing I ever did for myself. I do not know if Grace Marie actually paid for a trans-Pacific call and spoke to one of the Support Coaches here in the US, or if she spoke to someone at the office of Alan Hewitt, our representative in Australia, and I don't know what was said on that call, so it is difficult for me to comment on her impression of that call. I do know that our support staff are very capable and very well trained (we still continue weekly training with every support coach), and that sometimes callers do not like what we say to them. Why is that? Often the key to someone allowing change to happen is taking responsibility for what they are currently creating in their life--not in the sense of being to blame for what is happening, but in the sense that whatever is happening is coming from something about THEM, in some way, and not from the outside world. Once a person takes such responsibility, they have power to do something about what is happening. Without it, they are a victim, at the whim of circumstances. I want to reiterate my commitment to help each person who comes to us to get all the benefit we have promised. It really is possible to be happy, peaceful, and effective in the world all the time. It usually does not happen overnight, and for some there is more negative inertia to overcome, but with Holosync and the life principles we teach, it is very possible. Be well. Bill Harris, Director PS: If you found this article helpful, please email Mind Chatter to a friend. 13. Glowing Testimonials and Letters Dear Bill, Your program is an answer to a prayer of mine. My Yoga teaching training school just opened in September and after three months the ten students all said they could not sit and allow resistance to surface, express, feel feelings, etc. Alone they could not do it. All had experienced deep but fleeting feelings of joy and union during Yoga class but even that could not lead them into allowing themselves to sit and do it while alone. So I asked within if there weren't someway to shorten and help quicken this process of awakening? Within a few weeks Gay and Kathlyn Hendricks sent me a letter about you and Holosync. I invited three friends to do it also as an experiment and let me know the results after a month. It has been three weeks and I know it works. Thank you. I feel you are like a messenger--a kind of facilitating angel--and that this has been sent to us at this time on the planet to facilitate this quickening. I am including a part of a long piece on my process for the students. Soon it will include ten pages on the brain, latest research, sound, Holosync, etc. I plan to introduce it to student-teachers at the beginning of each program. Those who want it can try it as I know it isn't for everyone. Four students are about to start the Dive and Immersion. As much as I have meditated, as joyous as I can be, I know that this will facilitate even greater letting go and surrender back into the heart of consciousness. Regards, thanks, and blessings, Elizabeth B. ** I have been doing the program since May 4, 2002. It is difficult to share in words the tremendous benefits I am experiencing. The support letters I so faithfully received from you, described, predicted and guided me along this beautiful path. I had several (to me quite horrendous) challenges along the way; but, as you promised, I emerged stronger, healthier, and "lighter" on the other side. I only once called in for support and found myself very inadequate to find words to describe my experience so I just stepped back, observed and allowed the experience without analysis, description (even to myself) and without judgement and criticism of myself-very hard to do. So, here I am using the custom immersion 0.5 for several more weeks, then on to the last CD#4. I have come so far and am delighted to have a long path ahead to look forward to. My blessing, gratitude, appreciation and wonder flow your way, dear Mr. Bill Harris and all you wonderful collaborators. May the Universe cradle you. Sincerely, Marianne S.** Dear Bill..... BOOK REVIEW By Marc Gilson Ten Poems to Change Your Life By Roger Housden 2001 Harmony Books ***If you would like to read more about or order this book click here: Ten Poems To Change Your Life I confess to having a rather on-again, off-again love affair with poetry. At certain times of my life I've found great solace and inspiration in writing and reading poetry. And there are those times when poetry is, frankly, the last thing on my mind. When I happened across Roger Housden's "Ten Poems to Change Your Life," I was in the latter mode: not really "in the mood" for poetry, especially poetry I had read many times before. But I picked up the book anyway, casually thumbed through the pages, and happened upon this: " The ropes that bind you are your beliefs and preconceptions about how life is. This is true for every level of your existence. You are more alive when you are given fully to whatever you are faced with than when you try to maintain a safe distance from it, protecting yourself from the bare reality with your thoughts and beliefs about the situation." Wonderful! But wait a minute! Isn't this a book about poetry? Upon further investigation I discovered that Housden's book is actually much more about personal development and nourishing the soul through the power of words than it is about literary criticism or analysis. It would be something of a clichÚ to say that Housden's gift is to make poetry "come alive" for the reader. Perhaps it would be more accurate to say that in reading his book I became a little more alive, and found myself connecting to the words of Rumi, Whitman, Neruda and others in a way I'd never experienced before. Housden brings to light aspects of poems I've read a dozen times before, but had never noticed. Housden chose ten poems -- some familiar, some eclectic -- and explores each one in detail. But beyond the usual cultural and biographical background of poet and verse, Housden has framed his insights about each work squarely in the arena of self-exploration and growth. He reminds us of the ability of a few simple words on a page to ignite genuine inspiration and reflection. And most importantly, he brings the entire process of reading a poem into the realm of real mindfulness. Each stanza, phrase, and sometimes each word, can reveal a world of meaning. Nothing is taken for granted. With each poem, Housden takes great care to illuminate an amazing range of thoughts, emotions, and realizations often hidden from a casual glance. But, we are warned, exploring poetry in this way is not simply a lighthearted literary jaunt: " This is a dangerous book. Great poetry calls into question not less than everything. It dares us to break free from the safe strategies of the cautious mind. It opens us to pain and joy and delight. It amazes, startles, pierces, and transforms us. It can lead to communion and grace." Knowing many of you Centerpointe program participants the way I do, the above description alone will be enough to compel you to read this wonderful little book. Many literary critics enjoy taking poems apart, piece by tedious piece, until nothing is left but scraps of words, incongruous and limp, drained of meaning. Housden somehow manages to avoid this pitfall, and rather than depleting the power of the words finds a way to expand their power by aiming them directly at the heart of the reader. Housden recognizes the astounding ability of poetry to alter our mundane perceptions of ourselves and the world around us, and to transform awareness into a genuine transformational tool. Can ten poems really change your life? When explored with the penetrating insights, open-heartedness, and honest enthusiasm of someone like Roger Housden? Absolutely. If you are a lover of poetry, you'll enjoy this book from page one on. If you detest dry literary criticism, if you don't "get" poetry, if you think poems are stale and trite, if Whitman makes you wither and Rumi makes you run, Roger Housden may just change all that. ***If you would like to read more about or order this book click here: Ten Poems That Change Your Life You may also enjoy Roger Housden's book Ten Poems To Open Your Heart 15. Important Announcements (and I do mean important): **My new book, Thresholds of the Mind, is back from the printer, and I'd like to you to own a copy and read it. I have found that those who read the book have some tremendous "ah ha's" about their life and how they can do something to make it one of happiness, inner peace, and success. Here are some comments about Thresholds of the Mind from some prominent personal growth leaders: " In Thresholds of the Mind, Bill Harris offers a creative and practical new twist on why we suffer, and how, despite our resistance, we can attain deep happiness and inner peace, regardless of our past or present conditions. Thresholds of the Mind will benefit anyone interested in creating dramatic and powerful positive change." Jack Canfield , Co-author of the #1 New York Times best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul¬ series. " For many years Kathlyn and I have taught that the central problem human beings face is what we call the Upper Limits problem-the tendency to settle below the threshold of what is possible to achieve. Bill Harris not only understands this problem, he has created an ingenious technology for breaking through it, With the remarkable Holosync audio technology developed at Centerpointe Research Institute, all of us can now learn to live at a new and higher level of functioning. Do yourself a huge favor by reading Thresholds of the Mind and working with Holosync audio technology. Gay Hendricks, Ph.D. author of CONSCIOUS LIVING and co-author (with Dr. Kathlyn Hendricks ) of CONSCIOUS LOVING President, The Hendricks Institute " Bill Harris comes from deep personal experience with healing and consciousness. Thresholds of the Mind is truly inspiring and filled with profound wisdom. Holosync is the perfect addition to other growth and spiritual processes." Margaret Paul, Ph.D. author/coauthor of Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By You?, Healing Your Aloneness, Inner Bonding, and Do I Have To Give Up Me To Be Loved By God? " With a loving heart, Bill Harris guides us to the thresholds of the mind. This remarkable book is not only a profound tool for healing. It is also an invitation to explore the mystical interface between technology and the soul." Or join the Centerpointe program, if you are not a participant now, and we'll send you one FREE. **Six Months of Growth in Just 5 Days? Impossible? NOT! That is, not if you sign up for the next Centerpointe retreat. Our upcoming retreat in March of 2003 at Glen Ivy Hot Springs and Spa in Corona California is full, and there is even a waiting list, but you can still sign up for the next Breitenbush Hot Springs retreat in July of 2003 in Oregon! We filled the last two US retreats without even sending out a promotional letter, so if you have a big issue you'd like to eliminate, or just want to take your growth to the next level, don't wait -- call Centerpointe and sign up today, even though July might seem to be a long way off. Otherwise, you may find this retreat sold out and you'll be out of luck! Don't delay--I promise, the Breitenbush retreat will fill up fast. What if it doesn't work for you? No problem. We GUARANTEE results! If, at the end of the retreat, you don't think it was 'as advertised' -- and more -- we'll refund your money! You do not need to be a program participant to attend (though most people who attend are). (And if you're not a program participant, why the heck aren't you? Quit procrastinating and join.) Click here for more information: Centerpointe Retreat Information Or, call us between 9:30 and 5:00 Pacific time, M-F, at 1-800-945-2741 or 503-672-7117. **A reminder that Dr. Beverlee Taub, Ph.D therapist, facilitator and life coach, is available to help you maximize your opportunities and overcome your obstacles. She has an international telephone coaching clientele and supports those who wish to combine an in-depth inquiry with their use of the Holosync technology. Even though Dr. Taub has her own independent practice and is not a part of Centerpointe, she has utilized and recommended the Centerpointe program since its development in the late 1980's. She has been a consultant, coach, and friend to Bill Harris for over 17 years. Dr. Taub is a key facilitator at Centerpointe retreats, leading attendees in what she calls "transformational games," as well as meeting privately with those who desire more in depth work. Telephone appointments with Dr. Taub can be arranged by calling Dr. Taub directly at (503) 641-5408. There is no charge for an initial consultation with Dr. Taub and fees for additional sessions may be negotiated directly with her. Appointments are required. Visit the "Participant's Only" section of the Centerpointe web site where you can: Order deeper levels, headphones, and other products on-line. Just go to Centerpointe Home Page - click on "Participants" and follow the instructions. 16. Archives of previous editions of Mind Chatter (great stuff) can be found at: Our Newsletter Archives
