Newsflash: Just a few days ago, I was interviewed by Tim Miejan, editor-in-chief of The EDGE, a newspaper with editions in both Minneapolis/St. Paul and Kansas City. It turned out to be a great interview, i know you will benefit from it, and I'd like you to be able to read it. The interview will appear in the February issue of The Edge, which will hit the streets on January 31st. Not only that, but beginning with the March issue, The Edge will begin featuring a series of my articles in each issue. The EDGE's has over 100,000 readers, with content focusing on personal growth, meditation, integrative healing, and other topics I know you'll be interested in. Each month, contributors from throughout the nation offer their perspective on such topics as meditation, personal empowerment, freedom, preparing our children for the future, and other cutting edge topics. The paper regularly contains interviews with such internationally known contributors as Deepak Chopra, Marianne Williamson, physicist Peter Russell, artist Alex Grey, futurist Barbara Marx Hubbard -- and now, me! I have known about The Edge for some time now, and have great respect for what they are doing. Just recently, I've been lucky enough to get to know both Tim Miejan, the chief editor, and Gary Beckman, the owner. The Edge may be the best newspaper of its kind in the entire US, and I think Mind Chatter readers would benefit from subscribing. My interview will appear in the next issue, which comes out in about 2 weeks, and after that they will carry a regular article written by me. A one-year subscription is $35, a real bargain considering what you get. (Neither I nor Centerpointe receive any money from any of this, by the way.) To subscribe, just send a check for $35, or your credit car number with expiration date, to: The EDGE, 14590 Bowers Dr. NW, Ramsey, MN 55303, or call toll-free 1 (888) 776-7616. Improve Your Relationship: A Message from Kathlyn and Gay Hendricks, creators of ATTRACTING GENUINE LOVE and other cyber-courses on transformation RELATIONSHIP TIPS: THE SEVEN ESSENTIAL COMMITMENTS YOU NEED TO MAKE BEFORE YOU INVITE LOVE INTO YOUR LIFE In our last issue we spoke about the First Commitment: I commit to realizing my full potential for both closeness and autonomy. Here is Personal Commitment Two. Part 2 - Commitment 2 I commit to full expression, to holding back nothing. This means telling the truth about everything, including my feelings, my fantasies, and my actions. I commit to telling the unarguable truth; truth that no one can argue with; instead of giving my opinions, beliefs, and prejudices. I also commit to listening, non-judgmentally, to what people say to me. Why human beings do not tell the truth has never been studied in close detail, but in our work several main reasons have emerged. First, many people withhold the truth because they do not want other people to feel bad. Some people do not tell the truth because they want to hurt him or her. Sometimes we do not tell the truth because we have seldom witnessed the truth being spoken. Some people just have not had the opportunity to learn how to communicate the truth. Learning to perceive the truth within ourselves and speak it clearly to others is a delicate skill, certainly as complex as multiplication or long division, but very little time is spent on it in school. It is then left to life itself to teach us about telling the truth; and it does, but not always in a gentle manner. We encourage you to pay particular attention to those issues that seem not worthy of being talked about. The act of telling the microscopic truth about something trivial liberates the energy to uncover what is really going on at a deeper level. We have an entire section dealing with telling the microscopic truth on Day 17 of our course, ATTRACTING GENUINE LOVE, called Be Real. If you do not tell the truth you will forfeit your right to romance. My new book Thresholds of the Mind, is finally back from the printer and available for sale. Thresholds of the Mind has been enthusiastically endorsed by a long list of personal growth leaders and authors, including Jack Canfield, Gay Hendricks, Daphne Rose Kingma, Dr. Margaret Paul, and others. I know you will find it to be very helpful. See the Announcement section at the end of this issue for some of what has been said about this book, and for information about ordering. **** 12. This Issue's Feature Article: To Experience Real Change, You Must Be Ready to Change or The Spirit is Willing, but the Flesh is Weak by Bill Harris, Director I want to write about something I've written about before that is so important it warrants being repeated. What I want to write about today is so crucial that if you do not handle this one thing, you will have little or no success in improving your life. It is a stumbling block for many people, and ironically, the greater the need for change, the greater the suffering, the more likely you will be to be stymied by it. What am I talking about? Please pay careful attention, because what I am about to share with you is extremely important. I'm talking about the fact that in order to make any kind of change--particularly mental, emotional, or spiritual changes, you must be willing to... ...give up the old way of thinking, acting, and being and try on a new a different way of doing things. The fact is, you are getting certain results in your life because of the way your internal map of reality is constructed. It isn't luck or lack of luck, it isn't by accident, that you are having a certain experience of life and enjoying (or not enjoying) certain outcomes. You have certain beliefs, certain values, certain internal strategies, certain ways you sort, delete, distort, and generalize information and other stimuli as it comes to you, certain ways of assigning meaning to what happens, and all of this (and a few other things I have not listed) combine to create your experience of life and the outcomes you get. I have written extensively about each of these aspects of your internal map of reality, and you can find these articles, should you care to review them, in the archives of Mind Chatter, at http://www.centerpointe.com/news/archives.cfm. That this internal map of reality creates your experience and results in life is a clear cause and effect relationship. Your brain operates in a certain way, and you get certain results. To get different results, you must change the way your brain operates. Let me be really clear about this: there is no other way to get different results. None, nada, zip, zero. As long as you continue to operate in the same way as you are now, you will continue to get the same results. This is obvious, you say. Tell me something I don't know. Well, it may be obvious (though, believe it or not, many people fight me on this point, despite how obvious it is), but it isn't always easy to do. Why? Two reasons. First, 99% of all of the activity going on in your internal map of reality--all the stuff that operates in you to create your reality and your experience of life--is happening UNconsciously and out of your awareness. It runs on automatic, churning out the circumstances of your life. The fact that it runs automatically and unconsciously makes it SEEM as if whatever is happening is "just happening" to you, that it is coming from outside circumstances instead of from inside of you. This, of course, makes it seem as if there isn't much you can do about it. It also makes it very difficult for you to see how each part works to create what happens, which is very helpful if you're going to change how it works. It's kind of like needing to get under the hood to work on your car, but you can't open the hood, or if you do get it open, the part you want to change is behind something else and you don't know how to get to it. This is part of the reason why I have written about each part of your map of reality in detail, so as to help you understand better how all of this works. The second reason changing your internal map of reality is not always easy is that you constructed it with one main goal: to be safe in your family while growing up. when faced with decisions about what to notice or not to notice, what to believe or not believe, what to value or not value, what parts of you to show to others and what parts to hide, what methods to use in making decisions, and so on, you picked a combination of these things that created the greatest feeling of safety in your family. The more unsafe your situation, the more safety becomes important, and the more you will cling to keeping your internal map the way it is. Everyone, however, has many things that were not safe in their family, so everyone, to one degree or another, protects their internal map of reality from change--because at a very deep level, it FEELS as if it would not be safe to let it change. Consciously you may want the changes. You may even desperately want them. But a part of you, unconsciously, is saying" "What? Change that? No way. That is what has kept me safe." It may be a strategy, a belief, or a way of seeing yourself or others that continually causes you trouble in your life. But regardless of the consequences, that unconscious "inner child" part of you will fight to keep it from changing. The way your internal map of reality is constructed could be keeping you poor, lonely, depressed, anxious, shy, or could be causing a continuous trail of uncomfortable dramas to follow you everywhere you go, but if you unconsciously associate the way it is with your mental, emotional, and spiritual safety, you will fight to keep it that way even while consciously wanting it to change. So, what do you do? Luckily, there are several things you can do, all of which are very effective. First, you can have a talk with that part of you that feels unsafe changing. In Gestalt therapy, people actually have a part of themselves (in their imagination, not surgically) come out and sit in a chair across from them and then have a talk with that part. You can do this, too. Ask the part what it needs to be safe in changing the parts of you that you want to change, and figure out a way to give the unsafe part what it needs. Reassure that part that it will be safe, and that you will help to make sure that this is so. As corny as this may sound, it can have a remarkable effect. Second, you can dig into all the articles I have written about the various parts of your map of reality, and commit yourself to investigating each part and how it works. This takes time and effort, but it is very interesting work, and it makes what was unconscious, conscious. Since you can only continue to do things that do not serve you if you do the unconsciously, making all of these processes conscious does a lot to create change. Third, you can learn how to adopt the witness posture, the posture of that part of you that just watches what is happening with curiosity, but without any agenda as to what happens. I have also written extensively about how to do this. If resisting change is the poison, the witness is the antidote, and the more you practice just watching whatever is going on, internally and externally, the more the parts of you that do not serve you will fall away. The witness is the higher self many of you are searching for. Finally, the most effective way, and one that accelerates the effectiveness of the other three, is to use the Centerpointe program, meditating with your Holosync soundtracks regularly. Holosync naturally develops the witness perspective without any effort on your part, and it also makes conscious what was unconscious and running on automatic. It also raises your threshold for what you can handle higher and higher, which calms the unconscious part of you that may feel unsafe changing. Using Holosync puts you in the fast lane of personal growth and change. I see people everyday who desperately want to change, but vigorously defend the very beliefs and strategies that are creating the results they don't want. We all have an almost unlimited ability to come up with reasons why we have to do it the way we're doing it, which is just a way of saying that it doesn't feel safe to give up the way we're currently doing it and try something else. My main goal here it that you become very clear that there is no way that anyone can change their results without changing their internal map of reality, and that defending the old way, even though you may feel compelled by something inside to do so, just keeps you stuck. It is possible to create your reality in any way you like, but to do so, you must give up the old way of being. Be well. Glowing Testimonials and Letters Have been on the program for five weeks now and doing fine, nothing dramatic, but I can feel the old inner protocols losing their grip. So much for that...I actually wrote to say how much I enjoy the Mind Chatter archive. I am up to issue 42 now and have gotten "A LOT" out of it. Program training, Food for thought, great quotes, encouraging testimonials, and some good laughs. Thanks for creating Mind Chatter, (I know it isn't easy to do it every two weeks) and making the old issues available. Just wanted to express my appreciation Lee D. ** Hi folks! Here's something interesting I thought I'd share with you, related to the first of Bill's "Nine Principles". In England this week, there is a radio program about the plight of Westerners stranded in Burma during World War 2 when Japanese forces overran that country. They had 2 choices. Either be rounded up into labour camps, or flee hundreds of miles towards India through jungle and mountains -- on foot. The radio program follows the story of one of the few who took the second option - and survived. Here is a snippet from the story (paraphrased as best as my memory can serve me): "Hundreds died along the way - from exhaustion, from illness, from starvation ... After each day's exhausting fight through wild jungle, with little or no food, in stifling heat, you just had to lie down and sleep on the spot wherever you found yourself. It was pitch black and whatever insects were there would bite you all over." How did people survive, or even stay sane, in such conditions? "The trick," our survivor tells us, "was to try TO ACCEPT WHATEVER IT WAS THAT WAS THERE. " Regards & Best Wishes Steve S. :-) ** Dear Bill, I joined the inner circle and am very excited about the next level. I also plan to transform my psychiatric practice into a Life Design Training Center using your material as the core for change. I have been in practice for thirty-one years and this material is like a quantum leap in my understanding of how we change and grow. I also just wanted to share the changes in my life after on month: 1. Stopped all medications: had been taking Celexa and Trazodone for past 7 months because of a rather    profound depression. Sleep, appetite, mood, etc. all    back to normal and better since starting the tapes. 2. Tennis and golf games have soared to new levels. Golf handicap from about 20 to 12 or 13 in this past month. Tennis elevated from 4.0 to 4.5 level. Plan to take on my 35 year old son (I am 63) and kick some butt. 3. I developed a severe sinus infection five years ago and have suffered severe headaches (sphenoid, deep in the middle of my brain) everyday. This a.m., one month after starting the tapes (discs), woke up, no headache. 4. Emotional responses much more well modulated, situations at work and school that ordinarily would send me into intense feelings of anger or irritation I have found myself stopping, witnessing and being able to much more creative in my responses and believe that these situations will continue to improve despite some very difficult people and circumstances to deal with. 5. My wife (Cyndy)(second marriage) just celebrated our 17th wedding anniversary and she is doing the discs with me. She has been plagued by anxiety and    depression for years and I see a big difference in her just after two weeks of using the dive. Our relationship was superb to begin with, but I can see it moving to higher level in terms of creating new experiences around this type of work and becoming more and more grounded. 6. I taught A Course in Miracles for eight years, now teaching Conversations with God. Plan to introduce my group to you material at our next meeting. I am a certified instructor in Edu-K (use the brain gym    daily for past twenty years) and NLP (the map is not  the territory) and spent time with Dr. Milton Erickson  learning his style of  hypnotherapy. Loved your retreat question of "Who am I?" I have been teaching a class on the Power of Myth (Campbell) for the past 10 years and use that question for my students to explore (Also Anthony deMello tapes have exercise on meditation on "I am not my feelings, my body, etc.) My answer is what I am a perfect idea from perfect  source (perfectly becoming or imperfectly perfect)  and who I am is that entity striving to experience myself that way and why I am here is to share that experience with others to assist them in their same journey. I also resonated with your idea about being curious, I have translated that into what I called the perfect perception paradigm: curiosity, new associations, new choices, a renewed sense of freedom leading to forgiveness (letting go) and creativity (creating ourselves every instant). Anyway, I am thoroughly enjoying this journey with your material and will keep you posted about my evolution. You are deeply appreciated by all of us explorers. Sincerely, Terry ** I'm a (basic) Inner Circle participant from Australia. I found the following at www.integralinstitute.org/future.cfm (Ken Wilber) yesterday and felt that you might be interested: "less than 2% of the adult population have realized Jane Loevinger's highest two stages of self development (called "autonomous" and "integrated"). No practice has been shown to substantially increase that percentage. With one exception: studies have shown that consistent meditation practice over a several-year period increases that percentage from 2% to an astonishing 38%." It might offer further support on the benefits of meditation in your marketing material. It also potentially might open up other markets to you, such as psychologists, sociologists and others. The other material on the site also seems to be consistent with your desire to benefit humankind. I intend to research the stages of self development referred to, starting with the Integral Institute's site, which has a lot more information than I've quoted. Please let me know if the information I've provided isn't sufficient for you to access the site, or if I can be of further help. By way of a testimonial for Holosync, I'm just about to order Awakening Level 2. Though I'm cautious about stating benefits (to temper my enthusiasm for Holosync), in the last several months I've felt much more able to integrate my thinking and so have been able to write more successfully on some fairly deep topics related to humanity, to a more comprehensive world-view than the current scientific and religious positions, and on subjects which hopefully promote a better world generally. All of this is going on a website, but it's not really ready for review yet. Kind regards, John G. ** Hi Bill, Your article in Mind Chatter (#105) is the best synopsis of your belief system to date. It summarizes, beautifully, your principles and NLP understandings. It is exhilarating to read the writing of one who is so perceptive. I've reviewed all of your articles in the Mind Chatter archives, along with your book, and I've sensed that you are close to seeing directly into the matrix of All One. It is a puzzle, and you have identified some of the pieces accurately, while needing only some fine-tuning in your thinking in some of the others. I'm sure the bits and pieces will continue to fall into place. Thank you for being so open and sharing your insights into the human mystery: the nature of our existence in this density, and the abilities that will be open to all in the next. (Just as we have a mental map, the universe also has a structure (a map) which directs the growth and development of its entities. Much Thanks, David H. El Paso, Texas **** 14. BOOK REVIEW Your Hands Can Heal You by Master Stephen Co & Eric B. Robins, MD. Reviewed by Scott Spencer-Wolff To learn more about or purchase this book, click here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0743235622/wwwcenterpoincom Matthew 19:13 "Then little children were brought to him in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray." I would love to see 2003 become The Year of Touch. Mirroring our broken world, we pull back from each other and ourselves, afraid to make the connections we believe render us vulnerable. These tactile connections may, in fact, be one of our only hopes for coming together. The tactile world is a magnificent one. I have become, during my six years with Centerpointe "touchy." (I'm still working on "feely"). I am, much to the chagrin of some, a hugger, a patter of backs and a holder of hands. Few things are as delightful to me as a wonderful massage and I am learning, through the ministrations of my applied physiologist friends Warren and Rich, to be increasingly aware of the sensations and mechanics of my body. I have in particular marveled at how incredibly sensitive Warren's and Rich's hands are. Trained in the Rosen Method, they are able to feel and discern the slightest change in muscle tension, and understand completely how to correct imbalances in that tension. I have, for a long time, been aware of the power of hands. As a pianist I know that the music that flows through my fingers heals and restores. I remember learning in seminary the importance of religious rubric: the correct position of one's hands during the celebration of the liturgy. I have a large statue of the buddha in my living room with his hands raised in the ancient giving/holding position. This was not always the case, but for the past few years I have become more touch-sensitive than any period of my life. As a result of this evolution, I have become more attuned than ever to how many people are fearful of the power of touch. Fearful of the connection which comes when we physically connect with one another. The idea that touch as a healing ministration is ancient. The laying on of hands has both roots in healing ceremonies and, before that, in the sanctifying or consecration of humans for special roles or functions. Even today in many spiritual traditions, clerical ordination or leadership is facilitated by the laying on of hands. Both kinds of sacred touch have at their center three particular beliefs. First, that a person's sacred nature (one's "true" nature) is a state of wholeness. Second, that one's state of wholeness and completeness can be revealed or uncovered, and third, that the awareness of this sacred nature can be conveyed or facilitated, by oneself or another, through the touch of hands. From this belief structure, the concept of "wholeness" being parallel to "wellness" is easy and comfortable to grasp. Your Hands Can Heal You is a comprehensive source book, written and presented in a style addressing the needs and questions of novices and professional healing practitioners alike. The book deeply explores breathing and physical exercises designed to maximize the energy force which virtually all spiritual traditions claim to be at our center. Co-written by Master Pranic Healer Stephen Co, and Eric Robins, M.D., a surgeon and pranic healing instructor, the text is beautifully balanced between Dr. Robins scientific perspective background and Co's spiritual insight and experience. (Prana is another name for life-force energy.) Co and Robins employ colored pranas to achieve self-healing. The text offers a simple, easily practiced six-step program for creating the healing transformation. The six steps are; clearing negative emotions and beliefs, Pranic breathing, energy manipulation, energetic hygiene, meditation and energy-generation exercises. Each of these six steps are detailed in their own easy to understand chapters. Pranic ("energy based") healing is based on the belief that stimulating the "universal life force" helps bodies heal themselves. Practitioners learn to use the powerful energy generated by our hands to manipulate the body's own energy source, or prana, in order to accelerate its natural healing abilities for a number of varied health problems. The techniques described in this book are amazingly well documented and illustrated in such a way as to make them accessible to virtually anyone with the inclination to try. Many Centerpointe participants have reported that Holosync use has caused them to become much more sensitive to their own physical and spiritual energies. The tingling sensation in one's legs, or the warmth sometimes experienced during meditation are minor examples of this. If you are one of these people, and have further interest in learning to effectively channel this energy towards a productive, holistic result for yourself or someone you care about, this is a very helpful volume to own. It is also an essential library addition for anyone working in the realm of professional healing. For each of us, the opportunity to reclaim and re-vitalize our personal power is available for the claiming. Your Hands Can Heal You offers a clear window into the potential we all have to effectively, efficiently manifest the wholeness that is our true nature. Luke 4:40 "As the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various kinds of diseases brought them to him; and he laid his hands on each of them and cured them.
